When the multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter and TV personality Jason Derulo was recently asked about his ideal woman, his answer covered a remarkably broad spectrum. "There’s no specific thing," he said, "so I think it’s unfair to say what my ‘type’ is." But it turns out that there is one thing the So You Think You Can Dance judge considers essential: A beautiful smile.
"I’m not into messy teeth," Derulo said. "If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe."
As it turns out, he may be on to something: A number of surveys have indicated that a bright, healthy smile is often the first thing people notice when meeting someone new. Yet many are reluctant to open up that big grin because they aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look. If you’re one of them, consider this: Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of ways to improve your smile — and it may be easier and more affordable than you think.
For example, if your smile isn’t as bright as you would like it to be, teeth whitening is an effective and economical way to lighten it up. If you opt for in-office treatments, you can expect a lightening effect of up to 10 shades in a single one-hour treatment! Or, you can achieve the same effect in a week or two with a take-home kit we can custom-make for you. Either way, you’ll be safe and comfortable being treated under the supervision of a dental professional — and the results can be expected to last for up to two years, or perhaps more.
If your teeth have minor spacing irregularities, small chips or cracks, it may be possible to repair them in a single office visit via cosmetic bonding. In this process, a liquid composite resin is applied to the teeth and cured (hardened) with a special light. This high-tech material, which comes in colors to match your teeth, can be built up in layers and shaped with dental instruments to create a pleasing, natural effect.
If your smile needs more than just a touch-up, dental veneers may be the answer. These wafer-thin coverings, placed right on top of your natural teeth, can be made in a variety of shapes and colors — from a natural pearly luster to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Custom-made veneers typically involve the removal of a few millimeters of tooth enamel, making them a permanent — and irreversible — treatment. However, by making teeth look more even, closing up spaces and providing dazzling whiteness, veneers just might give you the smile you’ve always wanted.

At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!
Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”
We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:
Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.
Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

In summer, there is no shortage of occasions to show off your smile. Whether attending a wedding, graduation celebration, family reunion or neighborhood barbecue, you’ll want to look your best. But if your smile doesn’t shine as brightly as you’d like, a trip to the dental office may just be the confidence-booster you’re looking for. Here are some popular techniques to enhance your smile:
Teeth cleaning. A professional cleaning can make your mouth feel fresh and add sparkle to your smile. The dental hygienist uses special tools to get rid of plaque and tartar that you cannot remove during your oral hygiene routine at home. In addition, hygienists use a tooth-polishing tool that removes surface stains.
Professional whitening. Professional teeth whitening can achieve excellent results in one short office visit. But if you have several weeks before the big event on your calendar, you can also get winning results at home using custom-made whitening trays from the dental office. Either way, your smile can sparkle at summer celebrations.
Cosmetic bonding. If your teeth have small chips or cracks, cosmetic bonding may be a good option for you. In bonding, tooth-colored material is shaped to the tooth and hardened with a curing light. The procedure—generally done in one office visit without anesthesia—is relatively inexpensive, and the result is very natural-looking.
Porcelain veneers. If you are unhappy with the color, shape, size or spacing of your teeth, long-lasting dental veneers can give your smile a whole new look. Veneers are wafer-thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the tooth’s surface. Because they may be crafted in a dental lab, they may require two to three visits to the dental office over a few-week period.
With so many options, it’s easy to put your best smile forward at all your summer gatherings. We can help. If you have any questions about brightening your smile, please contact our office or schedule a consultation. Whether you wish to replace a missing tooth or conceal cosmetic imperfections, various options are available for improving your smile. Dental implants and veneers are both options for improving the appearance of your smile. Dental implants serve as replacements for missing teeth, while veneers conceal and correct a variety of imperfections. Dr. Brenna Hamrick-Stotts is your Redlands, CA dentist for installation of dental implants and veneers.
Dental implants permanently replace missing teeth. Installation involves anchoring a portion of the implant to the jaw bone, which prevents the implant from ever coming loose or falling out. Dental implants are comprised of a metal implant, an abutment and a porcelain crown. The metal implant is the portion anchored to the jaw bone and serves as the tooth root. The crown sits above the gum line and functions as the replacement tooth, while the abutment connects the crown to the implant.
In addition to replacing missing teeth, dental implants offer several other benefits. Since installation is permanent, messy dental adhesives are not needed to hold the implants in place. They also look and function like natural teeth and can perform normal functions, such as biting and chewing. Additionally, dental implants can improve speech. When the gaps from missing teeth are eliminated upon installation of dental implants, tongue placement when speaking can return to normal. Your Redlands dentist can help you decide if dental implants are right for you.
Veneers are extremely thin covers for less than perfect teeth. They can conceal various cosmetic imperfections, such as stains, discolorations, cracks or chips on teeth. Veneers are often made from porcelain, which is similar in appearance to natural tooth enamel. Veneers can also be color matched to the surrounding teeth so they blend right in. To install veneers, a small bit of enamel is first shaved off the front of the tooth. Then a dental cement is used to permanently adhere the veneer to the front of the problem tooth. Benefits of veneers include:
- Concealing cracks and chips.
- Covering discolorations and stains.
- Correcting the shape of teeth that are oddly shaped.
- Smoothing out uneven surfaces on tooth.
- Closing extra space between teeth.
- Having the appearance of natural teeth.
Dental implants and veneers are excellent options for replacing missing teeth and improving the appearance of teeth with cosmetic imperfections. The majority of patients with cavities are children because of their affinity for sweets, but adults also have this dental problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 27 percent of American adults aged 20-39 and 21 percent aged 40-59 have cavities (caries) in their teeth. Adults are often more conscious about their appearance, so they are interested in tooth-colored fillings for cavities. Find out about this dental option offered at Brenna Hamrick-Stotts, DDS, Inc. in Redlands, CA.
About Cavity Fillings
A cavity is a small problem that can become a bigger one if it isn’t treated quickly and thoroughly. Cavities develop when bad bacteria eat away at the enamel of the teeth—bacteria thrive when sugar is present, which is why children often have this problem. Your dentist will clean the cavity, then fill it in to protect it from further damage. The filling material is commonly made of amalgam (metal), gold or composite material (also called tooth-colored or white fillings).
Whenever you laugh or talk, sometimes the top of the molars in the back of your mouth can be seen by others. When you have metallic fillings, the silver or gold color is very noticeable. With tooth-colored or white fillings, no one can tell the difference. This is the main reason why many patients of Brenna Hamrick-Stotts, DDS, Inc. in Redlands ask for tooth-colored fillings for their cavity treatments.
Fillings Help Restore and Strengthen Your Smile
A cavity is just a small hole in a tooth that isn’t visible to the naked eye, but if it isn’t properly cleaned and filled it can widen and turn into advanced dental decay. Tooth colored fillings not only keep your smile looking attractive, they are also strong enough to prevent future decay for many years. Regular dental cleanings also help ensure that you don’t develop any more cavities.
